Learning Outcomes

The unit will prepare you for more advanced work in the philosophy of mathematics should you choose to undertake it, and it will also help you to understand the relationship between philosophy of mathematics and other areas of philosophy (especially epistemology and metaphysics), and to appreciate the importance of philosophical ideas and arguments in the development of mathematics and logic. By the end of the course you should understand the basic ideas behind Russell’s Logicism, Hilbert’s Formalism and Brouwer’s Intuitionism.
